Desperately dredging the gutters for recruits, Wolf cons his way into the depleted, demoralized, and poorly run Union army, and is promptly placed in the undesirable F Company of the 13th Michigan Cavalry.

Wolf’s company find themselves riding with Custer and the Michigan Brigade on a collision course with master horseman J.E.B. Stuart and the Army of Northern Virginia in a small town in Pennsylvania, called Gettysburg.

Will they stand tall against the knights of the South and prove themselves worthy? Or will they fall beneath screaming bullets and sweeping blades, becoming more bloody fodder for a lost cause?

The Northern Wolf Series is a fast-paced, action-packed, historical fiction adventure with richly developed characters that embody the American Civil War. Following both the enlisted soldiers and the leaders, the war will come to life. In the vein of Bernard Cornwell with a blend of Pressfield and Shaara this is one series you do not want to miss!

“…Greene does an excellent job of bringing each character to life.”

“One of the finest pieces of Civil War fiction written in the last 50 years.”

“I honestly think this work will be able to sit comfortably on a book shelf next to WEB Griffin’s Brotherhood of War.”

“I would rate this series better than Cornwell’s and definitely a must buy!”

“In the same vein as the Sharpe series, Wolf’s escapades don’t fail to excite me page after page.”

“An exciting, carefully plotted war story. The book, the second in a running series, is well paced. With clear skill, the author focuses on character development within historical context to tell a riveting story.”

“But not since John Jakes’, North and South series have I come across a book that captures the very essence of this period in such a way that it leaves the reading gasping for more.”

“With careful attention to historical detail — the battles, the historical characters, the landscape, and the era, Greene has penned a novel that is as dramatic as it is beguiling.”

“Greene is certainly a master at his craft for he balances the history with the story very carefully, and what he has written is a simply glorious book.”

“This book, this series, is next to impossible to put down. One more paragraph becomes one more page, one more page becomes one more chapter, but even then, I did not want to stop. I had to read on. I had to find out how this story was going to end.”

“I have greatly enjoyed this series. Character development is top notch and the author has done an awesome job with respect to history and accuracy.”

“Another great book in a wonderful series. In the same vein as the Sharpe’s series, Wolf’s escapades don’t fail to excite me page after page. I recommend to any fan of historical military fiction.”

“Greene captures the everyday lives of Union cavalry in fine detail and the book relies on the latest scholarly research concerning the Dahlgren Raid. This is a gritty, authentic, and immensely reader Civil War novel.”

“Well written. Quick read because I did not want to put it down.”

“Civil war, Kidnapping, prisoners of war, backstabbing and favouritism.
The authors research really comes through in the book the same as the rest of the series. So many twists and turns it keeps you gripped from start to finish. Clear your plans because you won’t want to put this down!”

“I recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated by Civil War history.”

“It is simply an amazing and fun, gritty read! I’m not a civil war enthusiast, but since the first novel, I’ve been looking forward each and every entry. I CANNOT wait for the final entry into the series!”

“His writing style puts you in the saddle with the Michigan Brigade at the battle of Trevilian Station. The action seems to swirl around you and it is definitely a book you can’t put down.”

“The author does a great job putting you there and in the minds of the characters. Very well written. I really enjoyed the series.”

“Mixture historical facts and fictional characters and plot twists. Good character development. Look forward to where series will lead us.”

“You will not be disappointed…except when you finish the book and want to read MORE!”

“This is a solid adventure story. The characters from the first two books continue to develop, and the action is fairly gripping. The fact that the story is based loosely on actual events adds to my enjoyment.”

“This book is a perfect combination of historical accuracy and edge of your seat action/adventure. Greene makes you hear the cannon’s roar and smell the leather and gunpowder world of 1860s America; then takes you on a whirlwind adventure through the American Civil War, warts and all. Cannot recommend highly enough, and can’t wait to see what Greene has in store for the future.”

“It’s a great story and a very neglected part of civil war history. I read all of his books now. I’m a fan.”

“I’m reminded of John Keegan’s “The Face of Battle” as Greene delved into the inner psychology of men in deadly struggle. So for me it’s on to the sequel ‘Northern Hunt’.”

“What makes a book great? Being even better than the great one that preceded it, that’s what & Northern Dawn does that.”

“The author is a splendid writer who has a genuine feel for the historic period, a gift for making even minor characters memorable, and the consummate skill to tell an action-packed, compelling story. Northern Wolf simply has all the stuff that makes for a great historical novel.”

“As he did in Book 1, Greene tells a gripping story by bringing to life actual events with both fictional and historic characters in convincing, fascinating detail.” Preston Holtry, author of The Arrius Trilogy

“The author’s vivid descriptions of bloody battles, stealthy patrols and the toll on the participants from the risks of the battlefield and the subsequent emotional impact for what they have faced will keep the reader turning the pages. Most of all, the character of Johannes Wolf stands out as someone, we can all identify with – more survivor than hero, struggling to do the right thing in challenging circumstances.” Preston Holtry, author of The Arrius Trilogy

“The author expertly depicts the life of a soldier and battle scenes. Spotlighting tiny details, conveying the enormous stakes, and expressing the camaraderie of men who must depend on one another, that’s how author Daniel Greene recreates the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. Having visited Gettysburg several times, it is incredible to look upon the open land and imagine tens of thousands of soldiers battling thereupon. This book vividly paints that tragically violent picture on that open landscape in my mind.”

“Greene breathes life into the cavalry operations surrounding the Gettysburg Campaign. This is some top notch war historical fiction on par with Cornwell and the rest. I can’t wait to see where Wolf’s journey takes him in future novels!”

“Overall, I would highly recommend Northern Blood to fans of atmospheric and immersive Civil War fiction, likable characters with fantastic dialogue, and for historical military novel enthusiasts everywhere.” – Readers Favorite, 5-star review

“A highly engrossing American Civil War adventure tale that is sure to keep readers turning the pages from cover to cover.” – Readers Favorite, 5-star review

“This last story in the Northern Wolf series was equal parts melancholy for the loss of President Lincoln combined with shocking betrayal and suspense. Wolf’s wicked nemesis finally meets his maker. The author has crafted a fabulous series based on historical events. This last book in the series is definitely my favorite. Highly recommended but it is best to start with the first story…“Northern Wolf”.”

“I read the Northern Wolf series while on vacation and couldn’t wait to complete one book and move onto the next in the series. If your a Civil War buff and enjoy historical fictional
this is a must read!”

“Something I really appreciate is the effort Daniel has taken at the end of each book. He takes the time to break down what events were real, which ones he made up to support the telling of the story & when he used a combination of both, altering a real even to fit his fictional characters. For Northern Shadows he went into more depth & details in this final section than even before, due to the historical significance of these.”

“Daniel Greene has spun an excellent tale in the Northern Shadows series. Most certainly a superior coverage of the civil war compared to many other novels. I hope Wolf & friends eventually come out of retirement to continue their adventures ( per chance in the new secret service?)
Thank you Daniel for supplying hours of interesting tales please keep up the good work.”

“This is an entertaining series, and well worth a read. I just finished the fourth volume, and enjoyed them all. As a professionally trained historian myself, I recognize that the author has taken liberties with history by inserting fictional characters into key events of the Civil War, but it works for the novels, and the author provides insights as an end piece. Highly recommend.”

“This particular book is the fifth one in the series. As I started reading the series I found myself enjoying each book and I couldn’t wait the get to the next one! Each book had great information on the Civil War, expanding my imagination, as I tried to picture the various battles and personalities of the various characters. This is one series that I wish wouldn’t end.”

“This series of books was really hard to put down. The characters were very well written and believable. I hope Mr. Greene continues the story of Captain Wolf.”

“I loved the historical aspect and that the author went back and forth between the North and South armies and commanders for perspective. I’m just about to download the second and third books in this series, and I’m really looking forward to reading them. Great new to me author, and I definitely recommend.”

“I really enjoyed this book! Great character development that makes the characters jump off the pages. Just recommended it to my neighbor who is a voracious Civil War reader.”

“This book is the compelling conclusion to a tale that has to be considered one of the best fictional accounts of the US Civil War. Having read all parts, I can commend the continuity. This is a significant achievement that many writers and screenwriters cannot accomplish. That the reader can recognize immediately who the characters are is the sign of a well-written book.”

“The core of this book focuses on the assassination of Lincoln and the subsequent law enforcement actions to bring traitors to justice. This part of the book is gripping and keeps the reader glued to the book. A book that is fittingly the conclusion to this series. Arguably the best book since the brilliant first book. If the author is looking for a new idea…Wolf’s son could fight in the Spanish American War and Wolf’s grandson could be a doughboy…

Recommended to fans of the Northern Wolf series. If you have read the others, you MUST read this one. Recommended to fans of President Lincoln and the history of that time. A first-rate book that is a great final chapter to this storied series.”

“Loved all 5 of the books, very sad I’ve finished. I’ve the kindle version and the audible, must say the narrator was spot on excellent- would not like a single ‘dry- spell’
in the read. now I have to find something else Mr Greene’s written. 5 books in less than two months is a LOT for me, but his story telling hooked me, and the historical elements kept me there. Well Done!”

As an amateur Custer historian, I love this book. Thrilling battles and personable characters. Not a typical “war is hell” story so far.

I liked this book so much that I ordered the rest of the series before I even finished it. It strikes a really good balance (to me) of moving the plot along quickly and giving insight to the characters thoughts without getting overly bogged down in inner monologue and reflection. I could easily put myself in the main character’s shoes and come to my own conclusions about how I would have felt and thought about the situations he found himself in. While it does not depict a true historical unit, it is based on one and is believable. I enjoyed reading about the Calvary aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg, something usually glossed over as “J.E.B. Stuart disappointed Lee” with little mention of union Calvary outside of the first skirmish the first day. Enjoyable book and enjoyable series so far, I’m reading through them quickly because of how easily it flows and I’m eager to learn what happens next after each chapter.

This is easily one of the best civil war historical fiction series I have ever read. The character development is exceptional, following Wolf’s rise as a humble immigrant to a witness/part of several of the most significant events in American history. I couldn’t put the 5 book series down for the days it took me to read it, and now my only sadness is that it’s over.

This is perhaps the best series of books I’ve read in the last few years.
The characters are well defined and consistent throughout the novel.
Better yet, the story has a beginning and closure at the end, you won’t be waiting months for “the next part”.
